Defoamers (Anti-Foam)
A defoamer is well known as Anti-foaming additive in Industrial processing aid. Generally Defoamers are chemically modified additive that reduces, hinders and break the formation of foam created either due to physical and chemical process. In many industrial applications Foams restrict and increase batch time, reduce overall production cycles and finally surface defects can be seen.
Most common Defoamer are insoluble oils, modified silicones and Metallic Stearates, Glycols. Depending upon processing need and economics these additive are chosen to prevent formation of foam or added to break a foam already formed.
The defoamers are insoluble in the foaming medium and has active surface properties. The defoamers primarily should have low viscosity and spread rapidly on foamy surfaces. The dual role of affinity to the air-liquid surface where it destabilizes the foam lamellas causing rupture of the air bubbles and breakdown of surface foam.
