fluorosurfactant
NON IONIC
S-386

100% active fluorosurfactant engineered for powerful surface-tension reduction, rapid substrate wetting and improved levelling across water-based, solvent-based and high-solids industrial formulations.

100 wt% ACTIVE SURFACE TENSION <20 mN/m MULTI-INDUSTRY

Wetting power beyond conventional surfactants.

S-386 is a concentrated nonionic fluorosurfactant capable of reducing equilibrium surface tension below 20 mN/m in the documented phosphate-buffer test system. This strong surface activity helps liquid formulations wet low-energy, contaminated, porous and geometrically complex surfaces at very low addition levels.

Its broad solubility in water and commonly used polar and aromatic solvents enables evaluation across coatings, inks, construction chemicals, electronics, textiles, metal-treatment baths and industrial finishing systems.

One additive. Seven application platforms.
Use S-386 where a formulation must spread faster, cover difficult areas, reduce surface defects or improve liquid contact with the substrate.

Active Content 100 wt%
Ionicity Nonionic
Surface Tension Below 20 mN/m
Physical Form Viscous Liquid
Reach the interface. Lower energy. Accelerate spread.
Final performance depends on binder, solvent blend, pigments, substrate condition, cure and application method.

S-386 reported solubility

Practical incorporation:

S-386 can be pre-diluted for easier metering and distribution. Select a compatible component already present in the formulation wherever possible.

Compatibility check: High solubility in a neat medium does not guarantee stability in a complete formulation containing resin, pigments, electrolytes, defoamers and other surface-active additives.

Start low. Measure the interface.
Use controlled laboratory ladders because fluorosurfactants can create large changes at very low concentration.

Formulation trial sequence

  1. Prepare an untreated control.
  2. Screen S-386 at 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.15% active.
  3. Measure surface tension, contact angle, wetting and levelling.
  4. Check foam, intercoat adhesion, recoatability and film defects.
  5. Verify cure, gloss, printability, water resistance or process-specific performance.
  6. Select the lowest level that achieves the required result.
Electronics note: The previously supplied solder-paste positioning uses a broader 0.05-0.30% starting range on total flux weight. Validate residues, voiding, solder balls and electrical reliability before adoption.

Quick technical answers.

Quick Technical
Answers

Why use S-386 instead of a conventional hydrocarbon surfactant?
S-386 can reach surface tensions below 20 mN/m under the supplied test conditions, enabling wetting of surfaces that may remain difficult for conventional surfactants.
Can S-386 be used in both water- and solvent-based systems?
The source reports solubility above 10% in water and several polar or aromatic solvents. Always confirm stability and performance in the complete formulation.
Can it replace a dispersant?
S-386 primarily modifies interfaces and wetting. It may support dispersion processes, including the documented PTFE-dispersant application, but should not automatically replace a polymeric pigment dispersant.
Can excessive addition cause problems?
Yes. Over-addition may affect foam, adhesion, recoatability, printability, slip or surface migration. Select the lowest effective level through a controlled dosage ladder.
